Frida Kahlo: A Portrait of Destruction as the Cause for Becoming

Online Webinar at Astrology University

The Frida Kahlo we know, who looks out at us from her extraordinary and unsettling paintings with a mesmerizing gaze, was born on the verge of death. Her life was shaped by losses and undoings that were at the same time the very sources of her creative genius as an artist. From a depth psychological perspective this pattern can be described as “destruction as the cause for coming into being” (Sabina Spielrein).

Astrologically, this is the terrain of Neptune and Pluto which symbolize those transformative forces of the psyche. Like Kahlo, our lives too are shaped by Neptunian and Plutonian losses and undoings. Their presence in our lives, as described by our birth chart and by transit, herald deep and profound changes which seem to demand relinquishment of who and what defines us so that a deeper sense of being may be born.

Drawing on the mythic figures of Coyolxauqhui, the Mayan Moon goddess and the Greek Persephone and Hades, archetypal psychology and Kahlo’s chart, we will explore and consider what Neptune and Pluto may be offering us in terms of that facet of soul that comes into being through destruction.
